Most outdoor slabs around Goldsboro were poured, floated, and left to it. Sun, rain, pollen and standing water have been working on them ever since.
A pool deck has to grip wet feet and stay cool enough to stand on in August. Bare concrete does neither well once it starts to spall. A textured coating gives you traction where people are walking with wet feet and takes the heat down compared to a dark, uncoated slab.
Every Every pool deck we coat starts with the weather window. Outdoor resin has to cure before dew, rain or a temperature drop reaches it, so the pour gets scheduled around the forecast rather than the calendar. The slab still gets ground clean first, the same as any floor. we install starts the same way: the slab gets ground down with diamond tooling until it is clean, open concrete. Coatings do not stick to sealed, dusty or oily surfaces, and no amount of good resin fixes a bad grind. That is why we own the grinders instead of renting them.

01. Look at the slab and the sky
We check the concrete and the forecast in the same visit. Outdoor resin has to cure before dew or rain reaches it, so the date depends on the week ahead as much as on the slab.02. Grind it clean
Diamond tooling takes off old sealer, paint and the weathered surface layer, and opens the pores. Outdoor slabs usually carry more organic staining than a garage, so this takes longer than people expect.03. Fix what the grind finds
Cracks get chased out and filled. Spalled edges get rebuilt. Anywhere water pools gets flagged, because standing water on a coating is the one condition that shortens its life outdoors.04. Pour and broadcast
The base goes down and aggregate is broadcast into the topcoat for grip. Outside that texture is not optional: a smooth gloss finish is slick the first time it rains.05. Cure and hand it back

What happens before any resin goes down outside.
The slab gets ground clean the same as any floor, but outdoor concrete arrives with a different set of problems: weathered surface, organic staining from leaves and pollen, and usually more spalling at the edges where water has been sitting.
Anywhere water pools gets flagged before we quote. Standing water on a coating is the one condition that shortens its life outdoors, and if the slab does not drain we would rather say so than coat it and watch that spot fail first.
What owning this surface is actually like.
Hose it off. Outdoor coatings take pollen, leaf tannin and red clay, and all three rinse rather than stain the way they do on bare concrete. A stiff broom and water handles the rest.
Keep a mat under a fire pit and put the grill on its own pad. Direct flame and dropped coals mark any coating. Furniture feet are worth capping if you drag chairs, the same as you would on a wood deck.
The topcoat is the sacrificial layer, so a scuff usually sands and re-coats in place without touching the color underneath. Outdoors that topcoat is UV stable, which is the one thing an indoor product cannot do: put interior resin in full sun and it ambers and chalks inside a couple of seasons.

Against the alternatives.
Against pavers, there are no joints for weeds and no settling to reset every few years. Against stamped concrete, the color sits in a sealed layer rather than in the surface, so it does not fade the same way. Against leaving the slab bare, you stop the tannin staining and the spalling that comes from water getting into the concrete every winter.

Questions about pool deck coatings
Will it hold up to full sun?
Outdoor systems are UV stable, which indoor resin is not. An indoor product outside ambers and chalks within a season or two. We use a different topcoat out there for exactly this reason.
Is it slippery when the deck is wet?
Not with the finish we put down outside. Aggregate gets broadcast into the topcoat so the surface grips wet feet. A smooth gloss finish belongs indoors, not around water.
Does it get hot to stand on?
Cooler than a dark uncoated slab in August, which is the usual complaint. Lighter colors help further. Nothing is cool at two in the afternoon in July, but it is a real difference.
What about freeze and thaw?
Eastern North Carolina does not get the freeze cycling the mountains do, but we still detail the edges and joints so water cannot get under the coating and lift it when it does drop below.
Can you coat a deck that is already cracked?
Usually. Cracks get chased out and filled before anything goes down. If the slab is actively moving or heaving we will tell you, because a coating will not hold a broken slab together.
How long before we can use the pool again?
Foot traffic the next day, normal use in three to four days depending on temperature. We schedule outdoor pours around the forecast, since rain on uncured resin ruins the finish.
